Math TutoringWhile working with kids in English and Spanish, I kept getting asked to help with Math also. I discovered that often students were simply missing a few places in their number sense foundation—those few holes created havoc in their math performance, unfortunately. Also, gifted students suddenly began having problems once they hit middle school and were required to perform in a certain way that fit into a prescribed and very linear way of thinking. This was difficult for them since they often were smarter than their teachers, but couldn’t “follow the rules” and kept getting bad grades! With a little work, we managed to help these gifted kids give the teachers what they wanted (since it was demanded) and also, not lose their creative thinking edge. Math tutoring is available for students dealing with any of these issues, from number sense to algebra (K-9th). The techniques used are multi-sensory; involve movement and creativity, and help students increase confidence in their abilities through predictable performance. |
